Ferndale Psychology: What’s in a Name?

Ferndale Psychology is a name full of meaning and symbolism for me.

It is a nod to my Welsh ancestry. My paternal grandfather was born in Ferndale, in the Rhondda Valley, a coal mining area in the south part of Wales.

Ferns are plants that grow in shaded damp forests in and around London, Ontario, as well as around the world. They grow in soil and on rocks, in lush and in desert habitats, so are quite adaptable, just like people. Like people, fern fronds (or leaves) unfold as they grow. In some cultures, the fern symbolizes new beginnings. Adaptation to circumstances and personal growth are key elements of therapeutic work.

Dales are valleys, like the valleys in Wales where some of my family originated. Valleys have a rich spiritual and cultural significance to many historical peoples. Valleys often symbolize the start of a journey. They are often symbolic of life’s ups and downs. To get to high points in life, you must also go through some low points. Your life journey, and where you see yourself going from here, will be explored with you in therapy.

When you work with me or one of my associates in therapy, you can expect to explore the use of metaphor and symbolism to understand yourself and your circumstances. You can also expect to be encouraged to get out in nature to experience the peace that ferns and dales can provide.
